Your Self-Talk Is Worthy of Your Undivided Attention
Your self-talk is something that often times happens without you even realizing or assessing it. It’s your inner voice that’s an ongoing commentary in the background of your mind that determines how you perceive every situation based on your beliefs and assumptions.
Your self-talk is vitally important because the thoughts in your mind effect how you feel, which in turn, has an effect on your behavior and what you do or don’t do. And that has an effect on your life experiences. We all want to have the best life experiences we possibly can when it comes to what’s within our control, but it requires action on our part. You must learn how to win in the battlefield of your mind. The fight is between thoughts that harm you and prevent you from getting what you want out of life, and thoughts that help you attain more desirable results.
When your self-talk is negative, it often times will cause you to feel bad, angry, irritated, hurt, frustrated, anxious, panicky or depressed. It can also cause you to have negative experiences. For instance, if you’re preparing for a job interview and you begin to have thoughts like, “I don’t think I’m going to pass the interview” it might discourage you from spending sufficient time preparing for it, and you might actually do terrible on the interview. When your mindset declines, your performance suffers and you literally create an environment that proves to yourself that you really can’t do it – creating a vicious cycle of what’s not possible for you.
Positive self-talk is reversing the negative thoughts you’re having and replacing them with more encouraging thoughts that’s filled with self-empowerment, possibility, belief and/or positive regard. For instance, reversing the example in the paragraph above with thoughts like, “I believe that it’s possible for me to pass the interview, if I study the job description and am able to provide my experience in each of the required skillsets in a clear and concise way.” If you’ll try positive self-talk, you’ll find that it will help you feel better and be more enthusiastic about the situation. As a result, you can literally create an environment that proves to yourself that you really can do it – creating a faith-driven cycle of what’s possible in life for you.
Use self-talk to create your future reality. The only price you pay for success is giving up your former pattern of thinking. Each of us must live off the fruit of our thoughts. I haven’t met anyone yet who doesn’t want to do things in a way that helps them attain happiness. However, happiness is not a given, it’s a choice. When you make assessing your every thought a priority, deciding if that thought is negative or positive and begin choosing the thought that leads to peace of mind, then you are making a conscious effort at choosing to be happy.
