Caught on Your Blindside

There are times in your life when extremely bad things happen all of a sudden, and you feel like you were hit on your blindside. It can cause you to feel overwhelmed, stressed out, frustrated, and/or short of breath from the emotional unexpectancy.
Life caught me on the blindside when:
- my brother went to a fraternity dance at a university and was shot five times in the parking lot by a robber.
- when my father fell off a ladder while cleaning the gutter of his roof and broke both of his hips.
- when my son was hit by a car on the freeway while helping someone push their car in the emergency lane.
- when my marriage ended in a rough divorce because of irreconcilable differences.
It was hard when I woke up in the morning being faced with those life experiences. It is easy to be positive-minded and kind when things are going well, but it is when you face difficult times that your true character is revealed. Defeat, loss and failure afflict all of us at some point in life. Our ability to handle life’s challenges reveals the degree of our strength of character.
So the question is, “How can you be positive-minded when life catches you on the blindside not just once or twice, but multiple times?” Leaving you feeling like you’re getting knocked down over and over again during a fight or you just can’t seem to win in the game of life.
My suggestion is that no matter how hard your life may become, trust in a power greater than yourself to get you through it productively. Knowing and believing that your life has value and there is always hope. God is able to turn a bad situation into a testimony of hope for someone else.
Start with acknowledging and accepting the setback or loss as “it is, what it is.” Make-up your mind that you must find a way to control your thoughts and emotions in order to make your day what you’d want it to be, if you knew it were your last day of life. By thinking this way, you will be in a frame of mind that looks for ways to take the best care of yourself and enjoy life. Next, you want to do the best you can with where you are and start with internal encouragement. Realize that there are some things that you can do to lift your spirit. Every morning say one of your favorite positive affirmations. Positive affirmations put your body at ease, boost your confidence, and help you believe in yourself. My favorite morning affirmation is this one:
DAILY AFFIRMATION
“Divine order takes charge of my life today and every day.
All things work together for good for me today.
This is a new and wonderful day for me.
There will never be another day like this one.
I am divinely guided all day long, and whatever I do will prosper.
Divine love surrounds me, enfolds me, and enwraps me, and I go forth in peace.
Whenever my attention wanders away from that which is good and constructive,
I will immediately bring it back to the contemplation of that which is lovely and of good report.
I am a spiritual and mental magnet attracting to myself all things which bless and prosper me.
I am going to be a wonderful success in all my undertakings today.
I am definitely going to be happy all day long.”
Next, you want to create a plan that’s targeted towards helping you to be the best expression of yourself. Below is a stress management plan of action that I created for myself, which you can go by or create your own:
- Sleep Away Your Stress – Get enough sleep (7-8 quality hours) on a regular basis to set the groundwork for a body and mind that can handle the necessary stresses of life.
- Hydration – Drink a lot of water to hydrate your body so it’ll develop a stronger defense against stress.
- Relaxation Techniques:
- Body Scan – This involves mentally scanning your entire body in search of tension and making a conscious effort to release that tension.
- Deep Breathing – Taking a few deep breaths and controlling your exhale can stop emotional stress in its track.
- Imagery Power – Close your eyes, relax your body, breath, and use your imagination to visualize the place you would most like to be.
- Eat Healthy – Foods can help manage stress in several ways. For example, a bowl of warm oatmeal can boost your levels of serotonin (a calming chemical in your brain that helps regulates your mood, which helps you to feel better). - Exercise – Doing this releases a chemical called beta endorphins in your body that counteract the effect of stress hormones.
- Meditation/Mental Sanity Breaks – Doing meditation helps to calm the mind and train it to avoid negative thought patterns. Start with 5-10 minutes a day. Also, take short mental sanity breaks during the day to get still and focused.
- Build a Personal Sanctuary – Make your home a more tranquil place by simplifying your cleaning chores. Create a system for getting things done a little bit at a time each day and, as a result, it will reduce your stress.
- Friend Therapy – Don’t isolate yourself during stressful times. Call a friend who offers words of encouragement and talk to him or her about the challenges you face in life. If you just want the person to listen without offering advice, let them know that. Sometimes we just want a listening ear.
- Research the lives of successful people who experienced hardship and how they got through it.
Change your strategies as often as needed while you work on having your best life. If you have a hard time believing that you can be successful in life, remind yourself of this great truth:
REMEMBER YOUR GREATNESS

And were still too tiny for
The human eye to see,

From among 250 million competitors.
And yet,
How fast you have forgotten
Your strength,
When your very existence
Is proof of your greatness.
You were born a winner,
A warrior,
One who defied the odds

Against smaller numbers,
And wider margins?
The only walls that exist,
Are those you have placed in your mind.
And whatever obstacles you conceive,
Exist only because you have forgotten
What you have already
Achieved.
